Top 10 Environmental Books: Part 2 - Children's Options

A big part of being environmentally conscious is leaving behind a viable and healthy planet for future generations. Teaching our children how to be environmentally aware is one of the best starts to a better and brighter future. In the spirit of our future, here is our list of the top ten environmental books for children.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

An overwhelming favorite, especially since the movie adaptation in 2012, this Dr. Seuss page turner teaches about the dangers of deforestation and corporate greed. Like all Dr. Seuss narratives, the rhymes and animations keep children entertained while teaching an important lesson.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstien

A sweet story about unconditional love, this childhood favorite also hints at the sadness behind environmental exploitation. It is a reminder of how much the trees around us truly give, from air to paper to shelter.

The Earth and I by Frank Asch

One of many beautifully animated Frank Asch stories, The Earth and I is a charming story of one child's friendship with the Earth. The story explores the different ways we can make the Earth “happy”, by cleaning up pollution and protecting the environment.

The Earth Book by Todd Parr

With fun and vibrant pictures on each page, this children's book teaches children the basics of how we should care for the Earth to keep it healthy. It even includes a list of ten ways to save the Earth. This book provides an excellent starting point when teaching children about global warming and pollution.

Where Does Pollution Come From? By C. Vance Cast

This book follows the main character and his cat as they explore what pollution is, how it happens, and how it can be prevented. The clever narration and animations help children to understand the dangers of many types of pollution.

I Can Save The Earth by Allison Inches

This Little Green Books publication is a cute story of a little monster that learns to be environmentally friendly. In the beginning, Max the Little Monster does many things that are bad for the environment, but he learns to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” to help the planet.

It's Earth Day! By Mercer Mayer

A charming story by fan favorite Mercer Mayer, everyone's favorite Little Critter learns about climate change and takes steps to do his part to help the planet.

The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute (Anymore) by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Another fan favorite, The Berenstain Bears are at it again in this story about the importance of not polluting. In this story, Brother and Sister Bear form a club to help prevent pollution and waste.

The Everything Kids Environment Book by Sheri Amsel

A great choice for bigger kids, this “Everything” book explores the many facets of the environment and all the different ways they can help protect the planet. The book encourages kids to get involved at home, at school, and at play to do their part.

Sofia's Dream by Land Wilson

This touching story follows the dream of a little girl as she makes friends with the Moon and sees Earth from far away. What she sees inspires her to do everything she can to protect the Earth.
