What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time is an opportunity to get more out of our natural daylight – more time and more daylight. Setting the clock forward one hour during the warmer months and then “falling” back again during the fall is the method to the madness of daylight saving time.

Why Use Daylight Saving Time?

The main purpose of daylight saving time is to conserve energy. Conserving energy today is even more important than ever. Conserving energy means preserving the planet and saving money as well, so using this method is an alternative worth checking out.

Fun Facts:

  1. Heart health and daylight saving time – for some reason there is an increase in heart attacks during the first days of daylight saving time. The heart attacks become less apparent during the fall.
  2. More people do a search engine search for daylight savings time than for daylight saving time, which is the correct term.
  3. With energy conservation a political concern, The Energy Policy Act of 2005 made daylight saving time for four more weeks running from mid-March to early November.
  4. There seems to be a decrease in accidents during daytime hours, making drivers seem to be safer during daylight saving time.
  5. Different countries start daylight saving time on various days. This can cause quite the confusion for those traveling to other countries.
  6. Not every state utilizes daylight saving time – Arizona and Hawaii are two of the examples that don’t adhere to this practice.
  7. Daylight saving time first showed up in World War 1 for the purpose of conserving fuel. If daylight was used more effectively then more fuel energy would be saved.
  8. Benjamin Franklin was the first American to push for the concept of saving daylight time. He figured that getting up early would have people in their beds earlier, thereby saving candle light.
  9. Part of the state of Indiana observes daylight saving time and part is opposed to it. Some states want daylight saving time all year round while others oppose it.
  10. To date many Americans have difficulty remembering “Fall back/Spring ahead”.

While many people feel that daylight saving time is more of a nuisance, others value it as a legitimate means for saving energy. To date, many people still oversleep and forget to set their clocks back, or ahead for that matter – either showing up early someplace or showing up late.

Thankfully, most bosses are lenient on those days; however, don’t make it a habit year after year - otherwise your boss might catch on that you may not really be all that forgetful after all. Some people also set reminders such as turning over their mattresses or changing the smoke alarm batteries every year during daylight saving time.
